Inside the Diefenbunker

I went to the Diefenbunker for the first time.
Heard alot of good things about this place.

Since "Doors Open" happens every year and its always been on the list every year.

It was a nice interesting historic place.
The guide was very nice, fun and informative.
It wasn't those boring tour where the guide talks in a monotone robotic voice.
At least he was into giving us the facts about the place.

It did feel like a ghost town but inside a big underground building.
It was nice to see the CBC studio, cafeteria, Prime Minister and where people were going to sleep in.

It was stepping back into time if something serious as the war would happen this is where all the important would stay if an bomb attacked Canada.
I recommend people to check out this place if they can.

Anti-Valentine's Day 2009

I'm being cynical and probably going to get in trouble here (With the Facebook note).
It comes again every year.
Its the day that I just cringe.
I want to call it "Anti-Valentine's Day!"
Where couples show their affection of love/romance by giving heart shaped box of chocolates or rose or even sex.
I will go "bleech!!!"
Its just another marketing plot for companies to sell lots of stuff.
Damn commercialization of a pointless holiday!

I miss the days where you were a kid and just gave out cards to one another.
I don't see those anymore.

I'm going ANTI-Valentine's Day again.
Its nothing romantic on Feb 14th, its just like any other day just that one day people are going to have sex.
Probably with the sex will be the break-up.
Break-ups are horrible.

Here's to being single!

Finally tried Moksha Yoga

Today I finally tried out Moksha hot yoga.
Its on 300 Preston Road in Ottawa.
They have a special this week, pay $20 and get the whole 7 days unlimited yoga.
The place is really nice.
The staff is very nice too.
The teacher I had was Jess Robertson and she was nice and helpful.
Nice at the end she sang a interesting song.

I feel great doing it.
Very intense mostly with the heat.
There were was bit of almost passing out.

Yoga is fun.

Traveling advice

Since we are living in a uncertain economic times.
How does one go about in traveling?
I am not one for going to travel agents.
I am one of those last minute spur of the moments kind of person.

Why I am asking because my parents are going on a cruise in Feb for 2 weeks.
I want to get out of Ottawa for a few days and before my birthday (Feb 20th for those that don't know)

Just say I would want to fly to Vancouver.
What options can I get? Is there such thing as a "cheap flight"?

Any suggestions on where to visit in the US or Canada that isn't too expensive but worthwhile?

Someone help me with this.

I want to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hoping 2009 will be a good year.
I should put down a list for my New Year's Resolution
Maybe harsh but who is going to read what I have to say

My resolution:
Try to move on and stop focusing on the past.
Too many blogs and I should focus on this blog and that blog

Stop hanging around people who are no good for myself, like to cause drama, think highly of themselves and play mind games.
Be more healthy and try to take up yoga (if OC Transpo workers stop striking).
Accept for who I am, if your friends can't accept them then tough.
Remind myself that I can't please everyone.
Hopefully try to write a novel or short story.

If anyone wants to contact me, feel free to do so. I don't want to be the one doing all the contacting and getting shafted or deleted for no apparent reason.

I think that is it for my New Year's Resolution.

Despite the stupid bus strike.
People did show up for it.

Being that its the holiday season.
I just hope OC Transpo doesn't go on strike.

I had a interesting weekend.
On Friday I had to do a photoshoot for Dinner Jacket for the upcoming issue.
It was a fun shoot, can't wait for the Livre D'Or on December 15th.
Not going to show the photos until the day of the issue and keep people in suspense.

Then later on I went to a friend's surprise birthday party.
It was a the hotel beside the RO building on Dalhousie as I call it the "THAT! Hotel".
Great time, too funny because some people almost ruined the surprised by showing up late.
Bad idea to have sparklers in a hotel room. Fire alarm will sound.
Lots of fun craziness.

Saturday I went to the sold out show at The Blacksheep Inn.
Tusks and Jim were playing. It his 9th Annual Holiday show.
It was packed and crazy.

Sunday did another photoshoot at The Candy Store on Westboro Village.
Besides being double booked with photographers.
I just have to say I LOVE THIS STORE!!!
Its better than the other candystore in Ottawa which I won't name.
The owner of the store was really nice and gave lots of info about the store and candies they were selling.

And I went to Dirty Laundry all the way out in Orleans
Its a photo exhibition by Tarek Al-Zand.
Interesting and nice photos.

Music and Food & Wine show

This weekend was crazy with music plus the annual Ottawa Food & Wine show.

On Thursday night.
I went to Zaphods to see three bands which were Shotgun Jimmie, Ladyhawk *the band not the movie* and Attack In Black.
It was an awesome show.
Music was amazing.

On Friday night I went to see 5 (technically 6) bands in one building in two different venues.
Playing at Cafe Dekcuf was Centretown Cripplers, Oh No Forest Fires and Fire Heats Water (Who I missed out to Matt & Kim).
Playing at Mavericks was Fucked Corpse, Best Fwends and Matt & Kim.
Overall it was a crazy night of music.
Dekcuf playing to indie rock crowd.
Maverick playing to a punk crowd.
Overall it was crazy and insane.

Finally I attended to Ottawa Food and Wine show.
This year it was held at Landsdowne Park.
This time I got there with my other friends before 12pm.
It was nice and bigger this year.
Its always busy on a Saturday because its party time.
My friends and I dressed to the nines.
Anyways I drank alot and got really "happy" buzzed and drunk.
I didn't noticed all the crowdedness.
I took photos and they are up on my Facebook account.

It was funny because while I was taking photos of my friends having a good time.
There were 2 girls walking passed us and said "We should have bought our digital cameras."

This year I was happy that with the tickets we can use it for food too.
I didn't over spend this year and 40 tickets is worth.
If you are those people who would use 1-3 tickets each on the cheaper wines.
My favorite had to be the Ice Wine Cider.
Too many to remember what I drank.
But I loved the lobster roll from Heart & Crown and the cheese cake.
We spend 5 hours there we were soo wined out.
When we left there was a big long line up.
I was like "Suckers!" :P

Last night I went to OCFF (Ontario Council Of Folk Fesetival) and considering I didn't get to see Feist.
Well who cares about Feist anyways.

And besides I got to see other singers and bands playing in different showcases.
Also afterparties at different hotel rooms where they do small sessions.
I had a great time checking this out and it was cheaper too.

It was the first time for me to see it.

Lights at Zaphods

Last night I went out to see this singer named LIGHTS.
She is a Toronto singer and all I know is that one of her songs was played on a OLD NAVY commercial.
Her music is poppy and dancey or dream pop.
The show last night was packed and considering it was the same night as Bedouin Soundclash. Wasn't surprised this show did really well too.

Her music was nice and enjoyable to listen and dance to.

Also playing that night was Everlea.
I don't know them but they are from Kingston and their music is alternative rock.
So was this other singer named Matt Reid

I started helping out with this online magazine.
The magazine is called Dinner Jacket. It is a online magazine catered to the fashion and arts in the Ottawa area.
From the blurb on the Facebook group.

Laura Barrett and Ghost Bees

I went to see Laura Barrett and Ghost Bees at Mavericks on Oct 7, 2008.
Kind of under attended but whatever, I got to see them play a full set of lovely music.

I saw Laura Barrett before but I only was there for 2 songs because it was crazy snowing last time she came and needed to catch the bus.

Got her full length album Victory Garden and its totally amazing.

Ghost Bees were amazing too.

This weekend is going to be very busy for me.
I can't be at every event at once unless I clone myself.
So far Thursday night I saw Chad VanGaalen and now last night I went to The Black Sheep Inn to see three different bands.
They were Mother Mother, Wooden Sky and The Superfantastics.

All three bands were amazing last night.
Mixing from catchy poppy tunes by The Superfantastics to folky rock by Wooden Sky and indie alternative pop rock by Mother Mother.

Chad Vangaalen and Women

Last night I went to see Chad Vangaalen and Women at Zaphod Beeblebrox.
I was soo excited to see both of them
I heard some good stuff from Women.
Bought both albums

Overall it was a great show.
It was packed which isn't a suprise and at least people are noticing Chad Vangaalen now.
I saw him last year when he opened up for Feist and I felt bad for him since usually openers don't get paid alot of attention.
But I guess when he was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize he got some attention.

Laura Barrett on Oct 7th

For those who don't know, Laura Barrett is a singer/songwriter from Toronto.
She is good with using the kalimba.
She finally released her debut album called Victory Garden.
Her music just gives you chills down your spine.

She will be playing Ottawa on Oct 7 at Mavericks.

Last night I went to Babylon.
Saw three bands played and they were Beast, Winter Gloves and You Say Party! We Say Die!

Glad to see all three.
Winter Gloves I've seen them alot and friends with the band members *mostly the drummer*.
Bought their debut album and they always put on such a great live show.
Best song is Factories.

You Say Party! We Say Die! was my first time seeing them.
Their show was crazy and was glad it wasn't crazy since it was a small turnout.
If it was I would be crushed with alot of people going crazy.
I should have bought an album.
The members are great people to chat too.

Vote Culture!

Yesterday I went to this town hall meeting in Ottawa U.
It was a friend that told me to go and check it out.
I never thought there would be alot of people there that are very concerned about the arts cutback that the evil Harper government is doing.
I know the candidates are not in my riding and its the city downtown riding.
Would be nice to hear what they have to say.

Well to my knowledge all the candidates except Paul Dewar of the NDP spoke in french.
It made it difficult for me to understand what the hell they were speaking.
Not to sound ignorant but I would like to go to a town meeting where there can be a translation,
Somehow I am going to vote NDP since he said what he had to say.
I tuned out when the PQ candidate spoke since they aren't in my radar and I find PQ only care about being french and separate from Canada.

It was a interesting town meeting.

Why is it hard to find my friends interested or be concerned about this?
I guess they have other matters of concerns in their lives they need to be concerned about.

Winter Gloves are a great band from Montreal. I've seen them three times so far. And they have this energy and excitement while performing.

It was kind of a busy day. I had to wake up early and volunteer for Festival X. Mostly did the setting up.
Went for a short bit for the Fulcrum BBQ and back to the volunteering.
Wandered abit and finally went to Zaphods at 7pm.

At Zaphods I was anxiously excited and waiting for Land Of Talk to play.
Saw them at Westfest in May and the openers for The New Pornographers in April.
Also Psychic Hotline and The D'Urbervilles were the openers for that night.
Seen the D'Urbervilles for the third time and they are amazing live.

I got the new Land Of Talk album on vinyl.

Fund cuts on the arts

We are living in a crazy time with Hurricane Ike and the Canadian and US elections,
I was checking this Facebook group click here about the arts fund cutback.
Noticing why some people on Facebook are going faceless.
I am sometimes clueless on politics but I think arts is what makes Canadians so good.
Without this funding how will be creative in our process of the arts?
I am curious will music festivals be cancelled next year or toned down??
I feel like the Conservative government is screwing up Canada.
We are fighting a pointless war and half the money is being spent on it.
Its a worthless war.
It should concern me since if I want to do some artistic in my photography work.
Would be good to get some government grants or funds to support my work.
So what do you think? (if anyone reads this?)

On my third night of attending shows. I went to a double CD Release show.
It was Tusks and Poorfolk, both are on the White Whale Records label.

Poorfolk's album been sort of available on CD since July.

September 13 was the "official" release week of the album.

The show was at Mavericks.

Opening up for both acts was the lovely and talented Sarah Hallman.

Overall it was a great show for all three acts.

It was a night of first time checking out three acts at Babylon.
I went to a CD Release show for the band The Soiree.
Was a interesting night of music.
Not a crazy show but it was nice and easy to listen to.
Other performers were Gianna Lauren and The Ethics.
Great local talents to have around.

I went to Zaphods last night to check out some bands playing.
I've seen The Love Machine 4 1/2 (half being the Westfest performance which got cut out due to the thunderstorm).
The other bands playing were The Sunjet Records Band and The Junction.
Overall it was a great show last night
I had alot of fun.

I saw someone I kind of knew in my program when I was in 2nd year and he was in 1st year.
Nice of him to let me use his flash/pocket wizard stuff.
Just to let you know that the Junction photos look alot better compare to the other ones

On Sept 9th I went to a CBC taping.
It was Sandro Perri and Pond Of Tigers.
It was just an hour of both playing live to a audience of 40 people.
It was suppose to be a FUSE taping but they ended it a few weeks.
I kind of miss it because there was this interaction with the artist and band and made it alot of interest to how they are with their music

After that I saw The Hotel Lobbyists played at Mavericks.
They opened up for The Pack A.D.
Both are from BC and they have that dark, grungey sound to it.

Kyrie at the Golden Cherry Awards

Last Friday I went to the Golden Cherry Awards which is a local arts Ottawa awards show.
It was an interesting night and I didn't expect it to be held in a church.

Speaking about Kyrie, get her new album Pagan Love.
Absolutely amazing amazing.
Favorite tracks are Jump, Talk, Song X (My favorite on that album), Land and Pagan Love.

Last night I went to see Mel C at the Bronson Centre
It was a good show but there wasn't alot of people.
I swear Emerge.ca isn't promoting shows well for Ottawa. Considering only like 300 people attended Mel C.

She sang the ones I wanted to hear from her first album "Northern Star"
I can't believe I waited for like 90 mins and she never went out to greet her fans.
Way to alienate Ottawa fans
Damn her "management"!!!

On Tuesday night I went to Cafe Dekcuf to see this band called i see rowboats.

Listening to CBC Radio 3 they play their song "In Cars"
Very Arcade Fire-ish sound.

When they played on Tuesday night they were amazing!!!
You should see them when they come back to Ottawa.
They will be in Ottawa June 12th for WESTFEST (Its free just to let you know)

Wow I went to a nice concert/show.
It was Hayden and Basia Bulat at the First Baptist Church
I only wanted to see Basia Bulat instead.
She was the opener for Hayden.

The first song she did, forgot the name but it was sooo amazing
She sang acapella song, no mics or instruments and it just gave me chills down my back.
I guess that is what happens when the show is at a church.
The only song she didn't sing was Little One.
But she was overall amazing just by herself.
She didn't have a band this time and she played the guitar and autoharp.
Funny she didn't remember the date she will come back to Ottawa at Zaphod.
I yell March 27 and she giggled. Somehow I felt like a crazy nutty fan to her :P
But she didn't mind.

After her set was done, waited for her to come out and see if she will sign me a autograph and take photos.
She was so nice, she said I was awesome for knowing her date when she comes back to Ottawa and very friendly too.
I hope she will be very well in the future.

As for Hayden
I really didn't enjoy it
Maybe I don't know any of his music and it was kind folky, soft rock
The only thing I did like when he sang 3 or 4 songs on the piano.
He is a great singer but its not my cup of tea
He is the young version of Neil Young or the 90s generation of Neil Young.
